In partnership with Portsmouth's local newspaper, The News, short films submitted to Shorts::Cut '11 are be judged as part of The Guide Awards. The awards honour the best in local culture and entertainment, with awards given out at a glittering event held at the famous King's Theatre in Southsea on Monday 14 November. You can see short clips from all these films on our screenings page
2011 Best Short Film Winner: Blackberry Stains –
drama (12 minutes) Matthew's life is turned upside down when his best
friend Lewis commits suicide. The truth behind this terrible event,
dating back to childhood, is gradually revealed through Matthew's eyes.
Directed by Robert Hackett, written by Roger Goldsmith.
Runner Up: We're Going Crabbing – documentary (12 minutes) a homage to the tradition that has brought many generations of Portsmouth families together, crabbing at Canoe lake. directed by Martin Chalk. Independent on the Sea – documentary. (12 minutes) This film explores what is involved in running an independent lifeboat station, directed by Richard Titley Private – drama (10 minutes) Trying to impress on a first date, two guys taken two girls to a secluded bunker in the woods. However the action turns out not as expected. Directed by Paul Grove, written by Garry Moore Tommy Stories - documentary (12 minutes) A journey through the memories of local people who were involved in the production of the film Tommy by Ken Russell in 1975. Directed by Roy Hanney. Whirlwind Summer Romance - drama (13 minutes). The film follows a young couples relationship from its beginning to its end over the course of one long summer. Written and directed by David Burtonwood. The readers of The News voted for the final list of nominees on The News Guide website in the run up to the Awards Ceremony on November 14, 2011. Winner for 2010 was the documentary Last Resort, by Russell Oastler, David Kinnaird and Lucas Way. Runner-up was the comedy Send in the Cops, directed by Sam Jones and produced by Ed Smith. Winner for 2009 was the comedy Less than Romantic, directed by Simon Hatt, and produced by Josh Hibberd. Runner-up was the documentary Mark, about local BMX legend Mark Webb directed by James Harrison. Winner for 2008 was the drama Stolen Youth, directed by Leon Chambers, and produced by Gary Rowland. Runner-up was the documentary Guilty, written and directed by Russell Oastler. |
